Celebrating Rosh Chodesh

NCJW members celebrated Rosh Chodesh on an evening falling halfway through the month of Sivan and approaching the month of Tammuz. We’ve just observed Shavuot, which celebrates the receiving of the Torah and specifically the Ten Commandments. Those laws form the basis of our United States judicial system. In Tammuz, we learn about the story of the golden calf idol, created by Jewish men when they lost faith in God’s protection and direction in the desert. Women didn’t participate in worshipping the idol, and were blessed by God for maintaining their faith. As a reward, women were given an extra holiday each month: Rosh Chodesh.

Our thanks to Beryl Michaels for her talk on the history and spiritual meaning of the months of Tammuz and Sivan and Marilyn Ross Isaacs, a talented art teacher, for leading us in art depicting our vision of the moon.
