Celebrating Rosh Chodesh for the month of Tishrei
On Wednesday October 4th, more than 20 NCJW Sacramento members met to celebrate Rosh Chodesh for the month of Tishrei in the sukkah at Congregation B’nai Israel. Our gathering began with the usual 30 minutes or so of schmoozing, followed by a particularly delicious spread of vegetarian food – as befits a harvest holiday. The unusual warmth of the October evening was exceeded only by the warmth of the assembled women.
After chatting and noshing, June Wiaz provided a brief introduction to the program, Sandy Kaufman shared her take on the holiday of Sukoth, and Anne Eisenberg invited attendees to share with the group who they would invite into the sukkah — hypothetically, at least. While multi-generations of family members was a touching and popular answer to this question, there were other interesting responses. Supreme Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was popular; other suggestions included Comedian Gilda Radner and Gymnast Simone Biles. One attendee chose as her invitees, two brilliant Jewish women scientists of the 20th century – Rosalind Franklin and Lisa Meitner -who should have received Nobel prizes for their work, and would have, had they not been Jewish and female.
The Rosh Chodesh group generally gathers the 2nd Thursday every other month.
