We’ve Been Sentenced

4:30 pm — 8:30 pm

Congregation B'nai Israel

Family Over Everything. Even Prison Walls.

What if your mother were in prison? And your brothers? And your childhood sweetheart, too. What if you had 16 close relatives who were incarcerated, many of them cycling in and out of prison?

From the time she was a toddler, this has been Kamika Hebbert’s life. But legacy is not destiny, and in Kamika’s mind, it’s family over everything.

Freda Fund and NCJW Sacramento are proud to present “We’ve Been Sentenced.” Join us on Thursday, May 12, to view the documentary short film by Amy Krause, which introduces Kamika’s story, and offers a rare look at incarceration from the viewpoint of the family members whose lives go on outside prison walls, full of loss and longing. After the film, guest speaker Kamika Hebbert will continue the conversation and share in her own words how she has beat the cycle of incarceration, and is now using her past experiences and first-hand knowledge to help others.

Two screenings are scheduled on May 12, each designed for a specific audience: 4:30 P.M. for Students and Caregivers, and 7:00 P.M. for Adults and Community Leaders. The program is free, but advance registration is required. Please visit www.thefredafund.com/events to register. Refreshments will be served.
