ONLINE EVENT -“You Do Not Walk Alone” – Accompaniment training to support asylum seekers

Given the need to avoid in-person events right now, keep everyone healthy and #flattenthecurve, our Accompaniment Training next March 18th will be moved to a web meeting format. We will shorten the time from 6:30 to 8: 00 p.m. We hope you will still consider joining us as this is something we *can* do,  from the safety of our homes. Taking the training now does not commit you to any specific accompaniment activity. We understand that some individuals should not have any additional in-person contacts while COVID-19 remains a threat. However, we believe the need for accompaniment will outlast COVID-19. And, hopefully those of you that do get sick will quickly recover, and then be back in a position to help others.

Convert your heartache and outrage to action! At NCJW’s January Speaker Series on the humanitarian crisis for immigrants, we heard from several local advocacy groups on how they are directly assisting immigrants in the Sacramento area. Responding to the interest of many NCJW members in wanting to take further action, NCJW will be hosting an “Accompaniment Training” for those interested in becoming volunteers with the NorCal Resist Accompaniment Network. NorCal Resist volunteers provide accompaniment to over 30 individuals and families in the Sacramento area who are seeking asylum or facing deportation, helping them attend court dates, ICE check-ins, and legal appointments. Together, we can build community and counteract a dehumanizing immigration system that thrives in darkness.

At the training, we will hear the experiences of current volunteers. Those who feel this role is right for them will be able to sign up for an email list to receive announcements of needs for accompaniment. Volunteers then respond based on their individual schedule and availability; most appointments are during business hours. Spanish is helpful, but not necessary.
