While the pandemic storm in California is beginning to wane, the destruction over this year cannot be overstated. The challenge facing women and children have been magnified and exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting economic crisis. Prior to the pandemic, women were already experiencing significant barriers to economic security and were more likely to live in poverty. Financial insecurity was especially pronounced for Black, Latinx, Native, Asian American, and Pacific Islander women in this state. The current crisis is the first economicpicture of woman carrying child with children in the background recession in which more women than men lost jobs. Therefore, policies that address the myriad obstacles threatening women and families are now more important than ever, and it is critical that women are centered in economic recovery efforts. With an unexpected surplus in the state treasury, let’s make sure that money is spent in the right places.

• Food Insecurity
SB 364 (Skinner) will provide free school meals for all children.
• Childcare Access
AB 92 (Reyes) will eliminate state mandated family fees for childcare through October 2022.
• Homelessness
SB 234 (Weiner) will create a program to develop housing for youth under 26 years who have transitioned from foster care and are experiencing homelessness.
• Reproductive Service Access
SB 379 (Weiner) will prohibit UC Health from contracting with facilities where UC healthcare staff are prevented from providing comprehensive reproductive and LBTQ health services.
• Poverty Reduction
SB 691 (Rubio) will permanently increase the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC) for workers excluded from the federal EITC based on their income or lack of eligible dependents and it would also expand eligibility for the Young Child Tax Credit.

NCJW CA Lobby Day 2021 will be conducted via Zoom. We will be joined by the Executive Director of the legendary Equal Rights Advocates which has been fighting for gender justice since 1974. You will hear speakers from organizations leading the fight in each of our issue areas. We will also talk about the do’s and don’ts of advocacy and how to be most effective in a virtual environment. Then in the afternoon (12:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m.) members from each section will virtually “meet” (either via Zoom or telephone) with legislators or legislative staff from their districts.

The stakes for women, families and children this year could not be higher. Be a part of the solution.
